Beautiful Fall Portrait Locations in Old Town Alexandria
One of the things I love most about photographing families in Old Town is the variety. Within a relatively small area, we can find colorful foliage, cobblestone streets, historic architecture, gardens and waterfront views.
Fall in Old Town Alexandria
The Streets of Old Town
The streets of Old Town provide a classic Alexandria backdrop filled with character. Brick sidewalks, colorful doors, historic homes and tree-lined streets create an elegant setting that feels warm and natural.
We can walk, explore and stop wherever the light and surroundings look especially beautiful. This type of location is perfect for candid photographs because families can interact naturally while we move through the neighborhood together.
Prince Street or Captain's Row
Prince Street is another favorite for its beautiful architecture and unmistakable Old Town charm. Its brick buildings, textured walls and cobblestone streets create a timeless background that works wonderfully with neutral and earthy fall clothing.
Carlyle House Gardens
The gardens surrounding Carlyle House offer a lovely combination of fall foliage trees historic architecture and quiet corners. This location has a romantic, refined feeling while still allowing children room to move around and feel comfortable.
Old Town Waterfront Parks
The waterfront parks are a beautiful choice for families who would like a more open setting. The water, pathways, trees and soft evening light create a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of opportunities for both portraits and playful candid moments.
Windmill Hill Park Tunnel during Fall Season
Windmill Hill Park and the Tunnel
Windmill Hill Park is especially popular during the fall. The trees and seasonal colors provide a wonderful natural backdrop, while the well-known tunnel has become a favorite location for fall photographs.
The tunnel adds texture, depth and a slightly more dramatic look to portraits. It also gives us a fun visual element to incorporate into the session while still enjoying the surrounding park and foliage.
The Best Time for a Fall Portrait Session
I love photographing sessions during golden hour—the period shortly before sunset when the light becomes soft, warm and flattering. Golden hour complements the rich colors of fall beautifully and creates a gentle glow in photographs.
For families with small children, however, an early-morning session can be an even better choice. Young children are often happiest and most rested earlier in the day. Old Town is also typically quieter in the morning, giving us more freedom to explore without large crowds.
The best time ultimately depends on your children’s schedules and when your family feels most relaxed. Beautiful light matters, but happy, comfortable children matter even more.
Why I Recommend 30 Minutes to One Hour
My photography style focuses on candid moments, natural interactions and genuine expressions. While we will take some thoughtfully arranged portraits, I also want to capture the laughter, movement and small connections that make your family unique.
Children often need a little time to become comfortable with a new person and environment. They may want to explore, stay close to a parent or simply observe what is happening before they are ready to participate.
For this reason, I recommend allowing between 30 minutes and one hour for a fall portrait session. This gives us enough time to settle in, walk around and create a variety of images without feeling rushed.
A relaxed session allows children to be themselves. Some of my favorite photographs happen after everyone has stopped worrying about the camera and begins enjoying the experience together.

What to Wear for Fall Family Pictures
Your clothing choices can help create a cohesive look while still allowing each family member’s personality to come through. Rather than having everyone wear identical outfits, I recommend choosing a complementary color palette and mixing different shades, textures and subtle patterns.
For fall sessions, I especially love:
Warm neutrals such as cream, oatmeal, camel and beige
Pumpkin, rust, terracotta and warm brown
Earthy greens such as olive, sage and forest green
Navy and other muted blues
Khaki and soft tan
Subtle floral or nature-inspired patterns
These colors work beautifully with fall foliage, historic brick and the natural tones found throughout Old Town Alexandria.
Try starting with one outfit you love—perhaps a dress or a patterned piece—and then choose complementary colors for the rest of the family. Knit sweaters, textured fabrics, flowing dresses and layered pieces can add warmth and visual interest.
Avoid having everyone wear the exact same color. Coordinating colors usually look more natural and timeless than perfectly matching outfits. It is also helpful to avoid large logos, neon shades and very busy patterns that may distract from your family’s faces and connections.
Most importantly, choose clothing that feels comfortable and allows everyone—especially children—to move, play and cuddle naturally.
A Relaxed Approach to Fall Family Portraits
Your portrait session does not need to feel formal or stressful. You do not have to worry about your children smiling at the camera the entire time.
I may encourage your family to walk together, play, tell jokes, cuddle or explore the surroundings. These simple activities help create natural expressions and meaningful photographs. We will still capture the classic family portrait, but we will also make room for the in-between moments—the way your child reaches for your hand, a spontaneous laugh or a quiet hug.
Those are often the photographs that become the most treasured.
Planning Your Fall Portrait Session in Old Town Alexandria
Fall sessions are limited and often fill quickly because the most beautiful foliage and comfortable weather last only a short time.
When booking your session, we will select a location that fits the look and feeling you want. Whether you prefer the historic streets of Old Town, the charm of Prince Street, the gardens at Carlyle House, a waterfront park or the fall foliage and popular tunnel at Windmill Hill Park, we can create a setting that feels right for your family.
Once your session is reserved, I will also help you prepare with clothing and color-palette recommendations so that you can arrive feeling confident and ready to enjoy the experience.
If you are dreaming of warm, natural fall portraits filled with genuine family connection, I would love to photograph this season for you.
